Your pocket check for Rivers Casino

A first visit to Rivers Casino goes smoother when three or four small things are sorted at home. The pocket check below shows what to bring and whether the door is a yes for you.

Bring photo ID, whatever your age

In Alberta you have to be 18 to gamble or even to walk into a casino. Staff check ID on anyone who seems under 25, and only valid government-issued photo ID counts. Looking younger is a judgment call, and it is not yours to make. So the Front Steps crew's advice is simple: bring ID at any age.

In plain words, that means a card a government office gave you, with your own photo on it. A store card or a work badge does not count, even with a picture. Keep it where you can reach it without emptying every pocket. That saves an awkward minute at the entrance.

The pocket check

Tap what goes in your pocket and answer three quick questions. The door tells you the rest.

In AGLC self-exclusion for casinos?
Want a Winner's Edge card on this visit?

    • 18 is the age for an Alberta casino, and anyone who looks under 25 is asked for a government photo ID: pack it.
    • The Winner's Edge card comes from the Guest Services desk, for members 18 and over showing a government ID; self-exclusion rules it out.
    • Coins stay home: the slot machines work on printed tickets only.
    • A self-exclusion term with AGLC (selfexclusion.ca) that includes Alberta casinos includes this one.

Winner's Edge, if you want it

Winner's Edge is the loyalty card AGLC runs across Alberta, a card that tracks points as you play. Having one is optional. Guest Services hands the card out once you show government ID, and you need to be at least 18. Rivers Casino has its own page about it.

Points come from slot machines and electronic table games, nothing else: 1 point for every $1 to $5 played, depending on the game. Some games are left out. Live tables and poker earn nothing. People enrolled in self-exclusion cannot be members.

    Money on a coinless floor

More than 400 slot machines stand on a coinless floor that runs ticket-in, ticket-out. That means no coins anywhere, and cashing out prints a ticket instead of dropping change. The casino posts no ATM or cashier details. Before you count on either, call Guest Services at (780) 790-9739, extension 102.

This bit is general advice and says nothing specific about this casino. Each casino game comes with a house edge built in, so over lots of visits the players as a whole end up losing more than they win. An amount and a leaving time decided at home are easier to keep than ones decided at the machine. Pick both before you leave the house.

    Not posted, so ask

    • Dress code: the casino does not post one, so call Guest Services at (780) 790-9739, extension 102, if you are unsure what to wear.
    • Parking: no parking or shuttle details are posted, and Guest Services on extension 102 can tell you what to expect.
    • Coat check: whether there is one is not posted, so ask Guest Services on extension 102 before you arrive with a big coat.
    • Holiday hours: none are posted, so call Guest Services on extension 102.

    Questions from first-timers

Does a 30-year-old still need ID?

Bring it along anyway. If you seem under 25, staff are required to check valid government-issued photo ID, and they decide who seems that young. You must also be 18 to enter at all.

Can you get the Winner's Edge card on a first night?

Guest Services is where the card is picked up, so ask there; bring government ID, and you must be at least 18. To check before you go, call extension 102.

    Do the slots need coins?

No coins are needed. The floor is coinless and runs ticket-in, ticket-out, so cashing out prints a ticket.

What if you are in self-exclusion?

Then the card is not an option: anyone enrolled in self-exclusion is barred from Winner's Edge membership. AGLC self-exclusion can apply to Alberta casinos, the regulated online sites, or both, for six months or for one, two or three years. It takes effect immediately, cannot be shortened, and is arranged online at selfexclusion.ca.
