Money and limits

Setting your limits at Rivers Casino

The easiest first visit is the one where the money question is settled before you leave home. The bead string below turns an amount and a time into a pace and a stop.

Mountain time

One amount, one leaving time

This bit is general advice and says nothing specific about Rivers Casino. A house edge is built into every casino game, so across many visits players overall end up losing more than they win. That makes the amount the first decision. Pick a sum you could lose without it hurting rent, groceries or anything else, and pick it at the kitchen table.

Then pick a leaving time. An amount and a time decided at home are easier to keep than ones decided at the machine. Writing both on your phone helps some people.

Build in breaks, too: a sit-down at Rapids, a walk around the block, a pause from the screen. If the amount runs out early, the night is over. Chasing a loss with more money only digs the hole deeper.

The bead string: one amount, one leaving time

Every peach bead is half an hour, every mint bead a break, the big bead is where you stop.

Shortcut
  • half an hour
  • a break
  • stop
most you spend in any hour
breaks on the string
time to head home

At home, pick one amount and one time to leave. Split that amount across the hours you mean to stay, and you get your top spend for any single hour. Step away for a break each hour; once the amount runs out, so does the evening, no matter what the clock shows.

Tickets, not coins

Rivers Casino runs a coinless floor of more than 400 slot machines, set up as ticket-in, ticket-out. That means no coins anywhere: cashing out prints a paper ticket. Hold on to it like cash, because it is money. The casino posts no ATM or cashier details, so ask Guest Services at (780) 790-9739, extension 102.

The clock helps as well. Slots run until 3 a.m. after Sunday to Thursday nights and until 4 a.m. after Friday and Saturday. Live tables close at 2 a.m. or 3 a.m., depending on the day. So the night has an end anyway, though yours can come much earlier. Holiday hours aren't posted, so call Guest Services about those.

If it stops being fun

  • Rivers Casino has a GameSense Information Centre on site, and the casino says any staff member can help a guest who needs it. GameSense is AGLC's responsible gambling program, with more at gamesenseab.ca.
  • Gambling calls go to the Addiction Helpline at 1-866-332-2322, run by Recovery Alberta, any time of day, free and confidential.
  • Around the clock, 211 Alberta picks up: call 211, send the text INFO to 211, or chat with it online. It can steer you toward gambling support.
  • Self-exclusion with AGLC is arranged only at selfexclusion.ca and can apply to Alberta casinos and racing entertainment centres, the regulated online sites, or both. You can pick six months, or else a span of one, two or three years; it applies at once and can never be shortened.

Questions from first-timers

What if I hit my limit in the first hour?

Then the visit is done, and that is the plan doing its job. Grab a bite at Rapids or head home. Topping up to win it back is chasing a loss, the one move the plan exists to stop.

Who can I call if gambling stops being fun?

Calls about gambling go to the Addiction Helpline, 1-866-332-2322, day or night, free of charge and kept confidential. 211 Alberta answers around the clock too and can point you to gambling support.

Can self-exclusion be ended early?

It can't be shortened. It starts the moment it is set up and runs the whole term you chose.
